<되찾는 시간>

<A Painting that is Nobody>

 For a quiet long time after college, I was not able to find a subject to paint. I just kept imaging this and that while I was interested in humans, the world, anxiety, memory, and drawing.

One day I was walking along the street. The sun was slowly setting, and there I came across a deserted house. Everything I saw was new to me on the journey, but as I was going where my feet took me, I was getting used to even those new things over time. Then, this deserted house stopped me in my tracks. It was a familiar scene, but at the same time, it was also a totally strange scene. I quickly began to sketch and took a picture of it. After I returned from the journey,

I drew it again based on the photograph, and after another several months, I painted it in oils. And then, again, I did a drawing of the house. During the process of depicting the house over and over, I would just let my hand draw its surrounding landscape in an unintended way. Therefore, subtle differences emerged between the drawings. The sense of time which has stopped in front of the deserted house reminded me of some smells, colors, and feelings that I had felt in the past. The then place and time awakened a desire in me to give body to vague stories of the past concretely with a language of painting as a process of awakening, not just as a reminiscence which means recalling the past. (Refer to The Deserted House) After that, I began to take notes or pictures everytime I travel or read newspaper, poem, and novel. I kept drawing whenever I had such a similar feeling or some sense, and sometimes the next scenes came to mind as a mixture of the afterimage and current sense while I drew one scene with my body and hand.

The results of drawing remain as a something that is not a complete conclusion which seems to be connected to the current sense- not then sense or sense of the past- , or not. For example, the previous drawing and the after-drawing (which was a process of depicting the chosen images that approached me) sometimes become a story when they are placed side by side even though these two scenes have no association or narrative. Depending on the way of arraying the drawings, the scenes might be read as a new story. I am not so sure if such a process of drawing can ever be meaningful.

Perhaps, it would be meaningless. At the same time, for me, this process becomes a fundamental question about 'what is painting.' Obviously, the act of transferring the mediocre afterimages onto canvas or paper constantly is important itself.

I hope that those accidentally arrayed images become a small hole for viewers to escape into a new story and their own world.
